Why “Schedule Your Day Around Your Energy” Changed the Game for Me (And Why It Should for Every Realtor)
Last week we wrapped up our 2nd half of 2025 business planning clinic. Business planning is one of my favorite things that I do in my Leadership position. I love helping my Agents envision their future and the best part is watching them turn their dreams into reality. I was doing some preparation for the session and was revisiting some old reading material. There aren’t many articles I reread but “Schedule Your Day Around Your Energy” from The ONE Thing is one I come back to again and again. It’s easily one of the most impactful pieces I’ve ever read on productivity, not because it gave me a new thought approach, but because it reminded me of something I’d been ignoring: how I feel matters more than what the calendar says.
As Realtors, we live by our schedules and calendars. We build our lives around lead generation, showings, calls, and contracts. But rarely do we stop to ask: Am I doing my most important work at the time when I’m actually at my best?
The Big Idea: Energy Over Everything
The article breaks down how we each have our own unique energy patterns. It’s not about whether you’re a “morning person” or a “night owl”; it’s about becoming aware of when you naturally have high energy, high clarity, restlessness, or when you’re completely drained. This was a monumental shift for me in my career.
This hit me hard because I realized I was scheduling my highest-value tasks like negotiations, strategy, marketing, leadership meetings sometimes during my lowest energy hours. Meanwhile, I was knocking out emails and admin work when I was clearest and sharpest. I had it all totally backwards. This article truly allowed it all to "click" for me.
How I Applied This as a Realtor
Here’s how I shifted my schedule and the results were immediate:
Identify Your “Power Hours” & “Brain Space”
I tracked my energy for a week. I paid attention to when I felt mentally clear, physically alert, or sluggish. For me, it was:
-
8:00–10:30 AM: High clarity
-
2:00–3:30 PM: High physical energy
-
4:00–6:00 PM: Restless but productive with movement
Time-Block with Purpose
I aligned my calendar somewhat like this:
-
Mornings → Strategy and lead generation: conversations, contracts and negotiations
-
Afternoons → Showings, in-person client work, team leadership, training & educating
-
Late day → Walks, calls, and tasks that didn’t require mental sprints. Typically when I find my late night “brain space”
Protect the High-Impact Time
When I'm at my best I use daily “do not disturb" type blocks from 8:00–10:30 AM. It’s where my brain wins deals before I even pick up the phone. If I’m not planning or creating in that window, I’m wasting it. You have to protect your time-blocks for productivity, just like anything else. Once you respect it, you’ll then begin to see staggering results.
Give Yourself Grace
Some days your energy dips, there's no problem with that and it's completely normal. The article reminded me that using low-energy moments for admin or rest is smart, not lazy, and also, very, very productive. This also means to pro-actively time-block your “time-off”. It gives you the time for sprinting but also gives you the time you need to rest & recharge. Also, everyone knows if you’re a Realtor and want to get busy, go on a vacation! 🙂
What This Means for You as an Agent
If you’re always feeling behind or exhausted, it may not be your workload, it may just simply be how you're approaching it. Take a look and play around with adjusting your workflow. You’re likely grinding against your natural energy instead of just flowing with it. Give yourself the rest and breaks you need. Listen to your body and respond. Consistency, like always, will be key.
Here’s my challenge to you:
-
Track your energy levels for 7 days (use the notes app or create a tracking sheet on ChatGPT!)
-
Identify your high-clarity, high-energy, and low-energy zones
-
Rearrange your schedule to match
Remember, small changes = big results. Consistency is key!
My Final Thought
This article truly changed the way I approach each day. Not just as a CEO & a Realtor, but most importantly as a Husband and a Father, which is my most important "job" in this world. I still work just as hard today, but now I work tactically. And it starts with listening to my body and then using my best hours for my best work.
Real estate is hard. You don’t need to make it harder by fighting your own energy.
